We tied up alongside in the guestharbour of NJK which is the biggest yachting club in Finland. Founded 1861 and blessed by the Russian tsar (Finland was then a part of Russia) it has kept it´s traditions and is still very active arranging international yachtraces.
The clubhouse (on the picture ) with it´s restaurant has been visited by loads of people with impact on history.
In June 1941 fieldmarchal Mannerheim (who was the leader of Finland during WW-II fighting the heroic winterwar against the Russians 1939) was having lunch with his minister of defense and the Swedish general Ernst Linde at this restaurant. At the end of the lunch Mannerheim was brought the news of the massive German attack on the Soviet Union (operation Barbarossa) and was told Hitler just held a hysteric speach where he declared that Germany and Finland were allies in the war against Russia. This was a complete surprise to Mannerheim who continued his lunch and later dinner on this restaurant celebrating the midsummerfestivities of 1941.
The result came the day after when the Russian airforce bombed all major cities in Finland. Finland was now again actively involved in the war but that´s another story.
We will stay here a couple of days before heading further to Russia and St Petersburgh
