The beautiful village of Sintra only half an hour car drive up in the mountains from Cascais, is a good starting point to reach Palace de Pena (by foot or taxi).
Palace de Pena was the summer residence for the Portoguese Royal family for centuries until they were deposed 1910.
I have never seen such a beautiful castle. Located on a mountain overlooking a green prosperous landscape and with the Atlanic ocean in view, it looks like a castle from a ferrytale.
