Day 27 (Tuesday) Jan 10, 2012
On the road again. Our goal for the day was Scotland. First we had to
call into the pub in Lancaster and pick up the missing cell phone – then
onwards to all parts north. First we stopped west of Carlise and visited
Hadrian’s Wall and an old Roman Fort. The wall separated England from
Scotland and ran from the East to West coasts. This wall was to keep out
the warring Scot’s and the Northern Tribes. We then went into Carlise and
saw the castle there. The next stop was the first town in Scotland –
Gretna Green. This place is famous for weddings as the age of consent is
16 in England and lower in Scotland so it is a place where teenagers
eloped to and the local Blacksmith would marry them. After checking out
the area we move on north to Glasgow and found ourselves a Day’s Inn –
just like home, for the night.
Day 28 (Wednesday) Jan 11th
We left Glasgow and one of the primary goals was to visit the Falkirk
Wheel. This is located at Falkirk, on the east side of Scotland and was
built in 2001 to replace five locks. This wheel lifts canal barges up
about 39 feet form one canal system to another. The wheel was not working
when we arrived so we could not see it in operation. We did sit through a
very informative video of the wheel and the principles behind its working.
Let me explain on how we got to Falkirk! The back way. Shirley just loves
the one lane roads. From Falkirk we drove around Edinburgh and saw both
Holroyd Palace and Edinburgh Castle and then went down to the docks for a
quick peek the Royal Yacht Britainia. From there we headed into the
unknown to find Airth castle which was owned by the Wallace family and is
situated somewhere near Stirling – though I think it moved !!
