Bay of Biscay crossing – attempt no 1.  Beautiful morning, up early, good breakfast and away at 0815.  No wind in the bay but we motor happily out towards the headland waiting for the predicted easterly to kick in to give us a close reach towards France.  Uh oh - out past the headland and we find wind on the nose – how did that happen?  We persevere but sailing takes us way off our course and the opposite tack is complete rubbish.  It was always going to be a tough crossing going south to north but we decide we need to re-think it so we decide to make for Viveiro further east along the coast and then make the hop from there another day.  To get there we have to round Cabo Ortegal but now the wind has got up and we also need the tide in our favour, which it’s not, and it soon becomes clear that we’ll really battle to get round.  The only sensible decision is to turn round and head back for La Coruna and we tie up again just after 5pm.  Back to weather watching!
