40:08.87N 08:51.56W Monday – another alarm call morning  and we’re away by 0615.  The current weather window is closing rapidly and there will be rain and high winds later today so we want to get in to Figueira da Foz as early as possible.  There was no internet at Nazare so we’re using an old forecast.  For once the wind direction allows us to sail a fast close reach and we also pick up a favourable current so we’re flying even though both sails have a reef in.  The first rain storm hits us 3 hours into our journey but it’s fine – almost a novelty as we haven’t seen rain for months.  Then it’s back to sunshine and we quickly dry out.  We see the second storm coming and assume it will be much like the first, but the rain is stinging huge drops, visibility drops and there’s a fierce squally wind.  There’s no time to reef further so we ease the sails right out and then take the headsail in.  We should have a second reef in the mainsail but the sea has whipped up so we ride it out with the boom far out to spill the wind.  Mira behaves impeccably and the squall is soon past, allowing us to sort ourselves out.  We reach Figueira da Foz ahead of schedule which means we have to cross the shallow bar into the harbour at low water instead of the flood we’d planned.  By this time the sea is lumpy, grey and building so we’re pleased to tie up to the reception pontoon and think about drying ourselves out while we wait for the marina office to open after lunch.  Another 38 miles on the clock but it’s high seas for the next couple of days so it’s time to visit the supermarket and the launderette and plan the next few routes.
