Under a cloud

We’re sitting under a cloud.  Literally.  A strong easterly wind, the Levanter, has been blowing through the Straits for the last few days and it produces a huge black cloud that sits over Gibraltar.  It’s fully overcast today but yesterday you could see a full blue sky apart from the big black cloud over us.  It doesn’t move and look as though it will throw it down with rain any moment but in reality is largely dry.  The direction and strength of wind means we’ve had to move ourselves away from the pontoon and can no longer go ashore.  It’s a good excuse to huddle up with a book and look in the lockers for forgotten tins and packets.

Before the wind, we finally managed to circumnavigate Gibraltar on our bikes.  The secret is to go anti-clockwise as some of the tunnels and roads are one-way. Needless to say I forgot the camera so we’ll have to do it again and I’ll capture the waterfall, tunnels and sea scenes.  We’ve also walked across the runway into Spain with our neighbours from the next door boat.  They’ve been here for 3 years so took us to their favourite Spanish café for churros and choclata – rich hot chocolate and a kind of fresh donut.  We’re now using our time stuck indoors to plan a trip to Ceuta – a Spanish town on the Moroccan mainland, the Spanish equivalent to Gibraltar I guess.
