It is Tesday.  We are running behind schedule for our sailing permit window to P-Kamchatka. We still have about 800km to reach Kushiro on Hokkaido Island (our last port before we leave Japan - after 5 months of fantastic cruising).  As usual, very little wind and from the nose, which most probably means 100 hours motoring.  The most populous city in eastern Hokkaidō, Kushiro is an industrial port that came to  as its harbour is relatively free of ice in winter.

Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands, is known for volcanoes, natural hot springs and ski resorts Winter Olympics were hold here in Saporo.  We plan to spend some days in Kushiro sightseeing, before sailing another 1,600km north to Russia.

National parks include rugged Daisetsuzan, home to steaming, volcanic Mt. Asahi, and Shikotsu-Tōya park, containing caldera lakes, geothermal springs and Mt. Fuji look-alike Mt. Yotei.
