Sunday 8May Overcast – 4.5 mile walk ashore. Brightens up so head N for attractive Kitries 8nm (M1.5)

Overcast, few spots rain 1300, sun out from 1515. No wind.

Duck ashore 0930 to follow guidebook walk No.9. Do 4.5 miles in 2.25hrs  Zigzag up cobbled mule track with snow covered pyramid of Mt Taygetus (2404m) and forested summit of Mt Mavrovouni ahead, along thro olive groves following way markers (most of the time, might have got a little lost!!) to Proastio village on escarpment, well up from coast so camouflaged from raiding Turkish pirates in days gone by, and down rougher zigzag track to Kalamatis beach and the late Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor`s house. (Have been struggling thro his Mani, having lost interest in Roumeli.) Well natured stay dog accompanies us for much of walk, and about turns when we meet Germans going other way with pretty mongrel they have inherited from pound. Arrive Cliffside tavern for hot chocky/coffee1200. Back on board 1300, as spots rain start. Sun shows 1515 so up anchor and head N to Kitries. Depart 1530, autopilot works fine, arrive 1700, anchor just off taverna in 20ft exactly where stopped last Monday with pupils. Quick explore ashore; beer in taverna. Like this place lots; low key and Greek. Pilot says good shelter from all directions too. Will stop and eat here when next passing. Dead calm. Sun sets behind lesser mountains of W finger. New moon out, twinkling stars and lights all around gulf. Pretty, and will be cold so HWB out again. Back to Kalamata marina tomorrow; fly home Tues to get ready for Jamie and Jen`s wedding.
