Title: Sandefjord to Narvika

Narvika      58:44.64N  09:08.55E

4 July

Despite thunder storms most of the night we woke up to blue skies and hot sunshine.  An relatively early start saw us motor sailing down Sandefjord at 8.30am, but we soon picked up a nice easterly wind, killed the engine and managed to sail virtually all day without any beating.  The standard pattern seems to be an easterly wind in the morning, veering SE and then eventually SW or even W as the sea breeze kicks in - which means that if you're sailing SW you need to start early to sail in straight line.  We were out in the Skagerrak today and quickly appreciated how fast the swell can build and how unpleasant the sea can be as you pass over the numerous shallow areas.  We kept the sun all day and anchored in a very fine bay (actually a flooded glacial lake) off Nordfjord.  A tricky entrance with a narrow channel giving a metre of clearance but then a perfect pool with good holding and a good uniform depth.  Our company for the night was 2 other yachts - a Malö and a Najad, which with our Hallberg-Rassy meant all three world class boat builders of Orust were represented.  We thought of sending a photo to the Orust chamber of commerce.
