This is my first blog from Chili III - so it better be
about something nice! I could write about the wonders of making water and all
that entails (i.e decent showers), or about our lunch yesterday of local
langoustine (more than we could eat for Eu5) or the delights of discovering
swimming wetsuits. But those will have to wait, as what I really
want to write about is our visit to Isla Toxa in the Ria de Arousa. We
didn't initially plan to go there as a read of the pilot book describing how to
get into the anchorage would put off any sane person...... lots of rocks (seen
& unseen) and very shallow water, but the alternative anchorage looked a bit
boring, so we thought we would give it a go (ha!!). As we approached we
discovered there was even less water than the charts indicated, but luckily we
were at high water so we managed to creep in and found a deep enough hole to
anchor in where we would still be afloat at low water. Although it meant we
couldn't leave until the next high water, we didn't mind in the slightest
as it was stunning. Isla Toxa is where wealthy Spanish holiday - in
spite of a swanky beach club, golf course and small private marina
( gin palaces only) it is still a stunning spot with lots of islands,
beaches and an ancient pine forest. It was absolutely perfect for
kayaking so we did a couple of decent trips round the various islands in
the bay and all the way round Isla Toxa with a stop at the nearby fishing town
of O Grove for a well-deserved coffee and churos. My arms are now
aching....
