Hello my friends,

You may recall that in my last blog I mentioned E who joined the Aussie boat (darned Aussies). A couple of people have emailed me to say that I have not mentioned her again, as I had promised.

Dai the skipper wanted us all to contribute to the blog. My crew  mates do a fine job of describing our progress (or lack of it), so to do something different I decided to give brief “snapshots”of some of the most interesting people that we come across here. To be honest, to be here at almost 75 North in a small boat, well...you have to be a bit crazy. So these people that I talk about are also a bit crazy in addition to being very interesting. |So about E, here goes:

E graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Sustainable Architecture. Almost immediately after that she took to roaming the seas on boats with a special interest in environmental studies. She eventually became skipper of a 72 foot steel boat. She is now Director of Pangea Explorations which takes scientists, film makers, journalists, in fact anyone who is interested on research projects all over the world on this vessel. E has also set up an Environmental Education Programme in Tonga’s Ha’apai Islands. If you are interested checkout: www.panexplore.com

E is also a talented artist, painting and drawing scenes from her travels, from Fiji to Siberia. But this is an interesting twist. If you buy one of her prints (I have bought 2), she will give, for free, a presentation by skype to a school, of your choice. The presentation , of course, is about the ocean and the environment. After the presentation, she will spend time answering questions from the class. I won’t go into detail, but if you look at the web site, you will likely be shocked by the effect that plastic microbes are having on the oceans, the food chain, and ultimately, on our health. Her pictures can be seen on line at www,emilypenn.co.uk

Of course, to have done so much in your life, you have to be getting on a bit don’t you? Emily Penn is 27.

Well that’s it for now. You may have just seen a blog from Dai concerning our expedition. I don’t feel like adding to it just now, I have to come to terms with it, but I will do so in the near future.

Take care everybody,
Pete
