At 03.20 Carango was approached by what looked on the radar to be the mother and father of a squall. We shortened sail, donned life jackets, clipped on and changed course by 15 degrees to starboard. The wind increased for 11 its to 28.5 kts and backed through 30 degrees in a few minutes. The squall passed down our port side as a threatening black mass. The radar showed the squall very clearly with three active centres and we calculated that the squall was moving at 18 knots.
