After a safe arrival and refuel we docked stern to with anchor our forward Med style to the marina pontoon. Salvador proved to be a large city 3m population and with beautiful, if in need of attention, architecture of colonial Portuguese style. There are numerous roman catholic churches with exotic iconography all feeling very foreign to an Englishman. Masses of Portugesesblue tiles on facades add to the beauty of the surroundings. The church of San Francisco has reportedly got 800kg of gold leaf (all supplied rom Portugal) smeared over just about every surface in sight in a remarkable display of vulgarity. We did two city tours and are now better informed about Salvador and its dramatic slavery history than we are about London.

The Carnival is big here and it is coming soon so there is almost incessant practising by marching bands of drums and drums.

 And more drums!

After three comfortable nights in one moderate and one very good hotel we bid a fond farewell to Arthur to return to London and then Liberia.

Then we were happy to slip our mooring and head out to some, hopefully clam and peaceful islands in the Bay of Salvador before departing North for the next rendezvous.
