CARANGO AMEL 54 #035

After rounding Cape York we crossed the massive Bay of Carpentaria South West to the port of Gove. There we found massive Rio Tinto open cast Bauxite mining. The by-product was being well landscaped and for such a massive undertaking it all looked under control - huge swathes of red soil being spread into gentle hills.

This is Aborigine land - the appealed and lost - Rio Tinto can mine until the 21st century but have to keep a sinking fund to restore the land to much as it was before mining. Huge cargo ships were being loaded as Carango sailed past towards the inner harbour and the Gove Yacht Club.

The finest yacht club aspect (barring the wheelie bin for empty ‘tinies’)

As we entered the harbour area - we saw a magnificent Royal Australian Navy  training ship ‘Young Adventurer II’
A modern steel square rigger flying a RAN White ensign - just like the Royal Navy/RYS but defaced with the Southern cross and Commonwealth star of the Australian national flag.

It was Williams birthday so he had a cake and a sulphur crested parakeet turned up to share the chips
