At this latitude, the clouds make no distinction between sky and sea, they swirl around the mountains and islands, finding their own path from one ocean to the other.

As we sail by, they discretely unveil a rock, glistening in sunlight, an archipelago with treacherous reefs or a high snow clad summit, it is like a ‘Son et Lumière’ Show but without the orchestra.

Caramor clawed her way, close-hauled, between Burnt Island and Bruce Island. In the gusts she pointed out to sea but in the lulls she turned her nose towards the shore. Franco watched the lee shore, as it inexorably got closer. In the end we turned the engine back on to get around the headland. We didn’t fancy the hard slog to windward on the other tack.

As we sailed across the aptly named Desolation Bay, we felt the force of the Pacific and glimpsed it through the gap between Stewart Island and Basket Island. We are right on the edge of South America.

The anchorage on Isla Macia is a little different, no deep sheltered cove here, we dropped the anchor in a bay and tied a bow line to an island and our stern lines to the shore.
