Contrasts in Coruna

Monday 8th Sept
Steve, Graeme and Judith arrived last night though
whether Steve can be described as
'fresh' crew is debateable, worn down as he is by
the effort of shutting down office and home life
to get away.
Everyone else is in good shape, despite the 4
am start from Guildford to Stansted and the
flight to Santiago.
We join the Sunday evening paseo in Coruna's main
square with its delightful dark wood tapas bars fronted by
goldfish bowl glass-fronted seating in the
plaza. We are not sure if it is us
watching the world go by or
whether we are in fact the
entertainment.
Monday is spent re-stocking the boat from the
fabulous local market, followed by a visit to El Corte Ingles (the Spainish Waitrose)
where we salivate over such delicacies as baked
beans and tea bags which are not available elsewhere. How
seemingly sad the English taste is when we
are abroad but it is nice to have those little home comforts aboard for those night watches.By
the end of the day most stocks are stowed, most last minute emails and remote
business
is done.
The re-stocking is often beset with little
challenges, such as at the fuel jetty where we acquire some 350 litres of
diesel
which would get us most of the way to Madeira if we
had to. We cannot bring the jerrycans on shore so we fill them in the
cockpit and inevitibly one of the older jerrycans
has a leak, requiring syphoning with great care.
The next day Roger looks at the Grib files and is
unhappy about a nasty low threatening to hit us about midway to Madeira, so he
decides to hug the Spanish/Portuguese coast giving us the option of diving for
port should we need to or heading across to Madeira should conditions
improve.
Already the weather is calling the shots ans we
text Christine in England to say dont book a flight to Madeira as we are not
sure when and wher will be the next landfall.
END OF REPORT FROM CORUNNA.
