Position           09:48.71S 138:02.68W

Date                1200 (Central American Time) Wednesday 19 March 2014

Distance run - 176nm over the ground, 167nm through the water

Distance (OG) covered from start 2,917nm

                        Distance to destination 57nm

Original distance to Marquesas (straight line) 2,962nm

I had hoped to be able to call land-ho before making the noon diary entry but a combination squalls, the most vigorous one of the trip giving 32 knots in gusts, and cloud prevented us seeing the land at 60nm.

The wind has gradually become lighter overnight and backed around to the east north east.  The sails were helping until then but only when aided by the use of the engine.  Still, think positive, lots of hot water and we were able to get the pole down and stowed rather than having to leave it until after arrival.

The Mate wishes to have special mention in despatches for clearing (cleaning) out the vegetable locker.  This involves much grovelling about on the cabin floor and chasing escaped potatoes around the saloon.  A good job to have done even of the original quest was only to remove a rotten carrot.

After note – in case the next diary entry takes some time to post.

LAND HO – 1600 the first decent sighting – look for the smudge to the right of the forestay
