We spent a very pleasant three days in Shelburne, enjoying the company of other transiting yachties.  The town of Shelburne has the largest collection of early colonial buildings in Nova Scotia and whilst the industry of earlier periods has inevitably disappeared there are many fine examples especially along the waterfront.

We fitted in a couple of cycle rides into the surrounding countryside which is beautiful

And provided views back across the bay to Shelburne and the club marina and moorings

I thought that this looked like a Nova Scotia Hippopotamus, the Mate could not see it.

Monday saw us paying our dues and departing just after 0900 to motor down the harbour, directly into the wind, of course.  Once passed Cape Roseway we were able to bear away and had a great sail eastwards.

Our destination was Carters Beach, described as one of the best sandy beaches in south west Nova Scotia.

The shortest route into this anchorage from the west looks both in the pilot book and on the ground intricate and tight.  I quote ‘Pass about 20yds south of the small tower with the flashing red light in it, there is at least 16ft at LWS on this track’.  In retrospect this was not bad at all, but as they say ‘a good landing is one that you can walk away from’

To add to the general excitement of avoiding rocks, bars and the like, when we fired the engine up for our final approach we had an error indicating that the alternator was not charging.  There was nothing much to be done until anchored and the engine ran without apparent problems.  Investigation revealed that the cover on the salt water impeller had worked slightly loose allowing salt water to drip onto the terminals of the engine alternator.  Fortunately no lasting damage appeared to have been done as after a through clean of the area and the connections the alternator behaved itself and produced the required charge.
