Our taxi picked us up from our cold, dark digs at twenty past eight. so pleased to be getting away from barking dogs, dripping water and last night – an all night wake complete with microphone wailing....... Pretty flowers outside the towns Vehicle Emission Test Centre and down to the race track in the valley. Arriving at the railway station at nine for our nine twenty-three departure for Kandy some eighty kilometres away.

We loved the train information board as we climbed the steps to the footbridge, a busy platform below.

We watched a train come in and pass below.

Heading to Platform 1, we were amused at how Gents’ and Foreigners’ get segregated.

I marvelled at standing in the sunshine and took in the lady on Platform 2 and her driver’s nest.

Then our girl came in.

As we settled in our first-class seats (£4.28) we could see two tiny figures bobbed down across the many train lines. Two men weeding, but they soon gave up on this mammoth task.....

Away on time and out past many eucalyptus trees and over the river.

The scenery.....

IMG_0041

.......soon changed from neat allotments........

.......to tea bushes.

Mile upon mile of tea estates gave way to small towns.

A lady on her way to work, easy instruction.....and many little stations with long names.

IMG_0054

Bigger towns with lots of rubbish........

Fairly grim scenery until our last station before Kandy.

Pulling into Kandy (half an hour late at 13:22) next to a posh girl, her first carriage a ‘Royal Saloon’..... now to face the taxi / tuktuk brigade for the two miles to our digs.

ALL IN ALL LOVELY TO BE BACK IN THE WARMTH
PRETTY BUT NOT AS PRETTY AS THE JOURNEY TO NUWARA ELIYA
