An Amazing Evening at the
Maize Maze, Smeaton Farm, Pillaton, Cornwall
Martin, Kim, Oscar and Jacob couldn’t
come to Newquay as it had been a last minute ‘thing that grew’ - sadly they had
already allocated their annual leave and had only been back from France a few
days before we went. Weekend in Lotus Belle Tent as a treat, time to have fun
and make up a little for what they had missed. Ever since they arrived last
evening it has poured hard. Let’s brave the drizzle and do something different
this evening. A Maize Maze as darkness falls........ The
boys pose by the ‘welcome’ bear.
Jacob takes on the big
deck chair.
Kim makes a new
friend with pretty eyelashes.
Oscar and Jacob play on the
trampolines, bouncy castle and take on the hay
rick.
Jacob shows
us the Droids we have to find, the boys are ready for
the off, Kim and Bella take the pace.
Bear
thoroughly enjoying himself.
We find Tikka,
Oscar ticks her off his sheet, next up was Rexx.
Kim, Martin, Oscar and
Jacob at the half-way point.
Enjoying the
moment..............
.......and the
field around us.
We had bought a map for a pound in a
sealed envelope ‘just in case’. Back at the beginning Martin
studies the route he had led us
through.
Looking at the map we realise the pattern – new each year.
On the wall of the refreshment shed
we read how the maze is created. The theme is decided and the maze is designed
on computers. The maize is planted in both directions
so that a thick crop grows. This means the crop is in lots of small
squares.
Next GPS
contractors mark out the design. This is a navigation
machine that can log the design, the paths are painted using white paint
using the directions the machine gives.
The paths are
cut out by using a ride on lawn mower and usually takes six to eight
hours to cut out (depending on the design) and has to be cut out three times –
the maze eventually gives up trying to grow.
The pictures are taken from above by
a remote controlled helicopter, high in the air.
Final touches are made. Quiz boards are placed within the maze, the entrance is
created and the atmosphere begins.
2015’s
pattern.
2007, 2010 and 2009’s
patterns.
Bella didn’t like the Halloween props. A great story
by the witch.
What a wonderful thing to do to a maize field and the means for a very original
blog.
ALL IN ALL A UNIQUE
