Fowey Bimble
We left Mother Ivey’s Campsite
yesterday in the pouring rain, arrived in Fowey in the pouring rain and woke
this morning......... The rain finally stopped at a quarter to three and we left
Maud in a flash to walk the mile to our beloved town. Bimbling past the old
cottages en route, we passed these very novel
planters. Set happily in the group, the old
shoes looked really great and we stopped to admire them.
So typically Cornwall. The bottom of
the steep Browns Hill –
our nickname – the Hovis Hill.
Above stands Place House,
a Grade I listed
building,
home
of the Treffry family
since the thirteenth century. The original structure was a fifteenth-century
tower, which defended against the French in
1457 by Dame Elizabeth Treffry. It was strengthened soon afterwards, largely
rebuilt in the sixteenth century and remodelled in the nineteenth century, the
east front dating mostly from
1817-1845.
At the bottom of the road is Fowey Parish Church. The church is dedicated to Saint
Finbarr and
is listed Grade I. It was built in the early 14th century and rededicated in
1336, replacing a previous Norman
church.
The classic Cornish Cross in
the churchyard and there we were in the town
itself.
Time for tourist poses with
the wonderful memories of Beez Neez parked behind us in May
2008.
I got to have another picture to show the sea entrance that saw us leave ‘a few miles ago’. We
spent an hour or so going in to all the shops we remembered – the chandlery, the
gallery, Boots and a few others, as well as some new shops. I bought Bear a pair
of Sketchers, a new rain jacket and on Bear’s insistence a big umbrella in the
happy colours like the one back on Beez. Time for fish an chips before we wended
our way back to Maud. A swift victory for me on the backgammon board and
surprise of surprises – no rain.
ALL IN ALL AMAZING TO BE BACK LOVELY TO REVISIT OUR FOWEY |
