We left the red bus and waited a few minutes before boarding the Yellow Bus that would take us to the Botanic Gardens. Modern hotels then a stop to drop people at the Singapore Flyer – on our list for tomorrow. Just to the left were curious garages with numbers and apartments above, this is the nerve centre when the Grand Prix comes to town.

We leave the Flyer, the Marina Sands Hotel and head back into the CBD and the many high rise towers.

We saw the building again after we had crossed the river. Merlion, the symbol of Singapore spouts in the middle of the picture.

The voice chirped in our ears to tell us about ERP – the first city in the world to implement an electronic road toll collection system for purposes of congestion pricing (since 1998, vehicles do not stop or slow down to pay tolls, they are all fitted with a little magic box that sits in front of the driver on the windscreen). The Electronic Road Pricing traffic management system, it apparently compliments the COE (Certificate Of Entitlement) which was implemented earlier in 1990. It is hugely expensive to own a car in Singapore, even owning a motorbike or scooter is strictly regulated and very costly.
The ERP, although unpopular with motorists has served its purpose. It has helped change road usage patterns. Traffic has decreased by 25,000 during peak hours with average road speeds down by 20%, traffic has eased and more road users are out and about in off-peak hours.

Social Housing. Available at the age of thirty five, many Singaporeans use this as a form of proposal – “we will get a place now”. From 125 – 250 thousand pounds these apartments are leased for ninety years.
