At a quarter past five we were boarded by half a mini bus full of giggling, super friendly officials. Budhi Toffi was first aboard – our Indonesian Del Boy equivalent. He presented his card as being The Tourist Office and suggested we ring him for anything before we tried anyone else. The office has a wonderful address – J.I.Jend. Sudiman, Ohoijang-langgur, South East Maluku – Maluku – Indonesia. Meanwhile the Immigration ladies were squealing in delight each time they had Bear use our big stamp (the inaugural time for officialdom), after all was completed he was given most of the pieces of paper back but he was pleased to have delighted them so. The happy group, (well all except the standing man, who just thrust his finger up toward the yellow ‘Q’ flag and lowered it smartly) left after taking our pictures and some of the girl. The head man at the front of the group had a smashing name – Herman.

I lost five four at backgammon but was soon distracted by loads cheering and waving from the incoming ferry.

Sunset brought our first call to prayer. A pleasant sound, although amplified as if they had borrowed speakers from the Rolling Stones........was soon joined by the call from a nearby competitor and then another and then another. Now we were at cacophony pitch with a local karaoke bar competing with a chap killing Words by the Bee Gees only slightly overshadowed by his backing ‘doo-whoppers’. The cockerel did not want to miss out, so he found his best point of vocalisation and gave it stacks. What a welcome. Time for a celebratory drink, some nibbles and an avocado dip over a game of Mexican train dominoes – I was thrashed...........
