The lady at the campsite said we really ought to take the short drive to Lake Matheson. Ten minutes on a gravel road to what looked like a brand new car park. The gardens were laid out neatly and the signs too.

The mountains provided the most amazing backdrop as we bimbled over a bridge and found ourselves by a stream.

A robin came with us hopping from tree to tree as we caught our first sight of the lake. Bear tried out the view in the warmth of the afternoon sun. Lake Matheson was formed by glaciation around 14,000 years ago.

Very quiet and stunning until a DOC man started up a chainsaw, we had been warned that heavy trimming was going on.

Through the woods, by the lake and onto a flax lined boardwalk

We enjoyed bimbling, looking at the plants, stopping the various lookouts. Strange looking down into the clear, tea-coloured water at the water flora.

The reflection was just a bit ruffled by the breeze.

Time for a nozz in the shop before moving on to Gillespie’s Beach.
