Mapu ʻa Vaea meaning Chief Whistles is on the south-western side of the island and a must visit on our list. The books say that on a windy day with a big swell, the blowholes can spurt water over fifty feet in the air. There are hundreds of holes in the coral, stretching more than three miles along the coast, near the village of Houma. Today, not much wind and a fairly flat sea - our expectations today were realistic. The blowholes did make the necessary whistling sounds and we enjoyed standing and watching the show.
