A Spuddle in Baby Beez and a Picnic on Nuku Island

We did something we haven’t done for ages, we packed a picnic before we went for a spuddle along the shore.

Round the corner we could see where an arch once stood.

A beach, but the little island of Nuku beckoned.

Looking up we saw fruit bats. I wish I had had the big camera with us the first time we went aboard Zebedee. During the evening we watched many chaps flying low overheard, at first glance, easily mistaken for hawks, except for the pointy ends rather than fingers at the wing tips. They are just massive, wing spans over four feet across, chattering each evening, pity these Batman lookalikes were so high up in the trees.

A welcome committee awaited us on Nuku.

Funny how they all face into the wind.

As we get nearer, they shuffle quickly to their left, the nearest takes off and lands beyond the pack...................

.......................until nerves get the better of them and they all take off.

Bear checks on Baby Beez, I go off to explore.

The coral here was quite smooth.

Bear caught up and rescued a chap who was drying out and quite brittle, a lovely colour though.

He was happy to show us his underside, back in the water he soon made a full recovery and adopted the correct shape.

I wanted to see how far I could paddle out, knee deep was the limit. This was half way and looking back at Bear, who picked his way through the hundreds of baby sea cucumbers.

Our friends had regrouped and were stretching and preening.

We found one little holiday chalet, in need of a haircut.

We found public toilets, well one of each, in a very bad way and a ‘one carefully owned’ shack.

Bear tried it for size. What a shame, really nice potential.

Bear was very taken with the concrete privvy and felt the need to stand it up.

Bear had read that Nuku is apparently one of the most photographed islands in all of Tonga. Mmmm.

Pretty but not exceptional.

We settled for our picnic, I always throw a little tidbit for the ants to gather on rather than pester us. This time a load of crickets joined the party. Who would have thought cheese and pickle would be to their taste. Bear didn’t share any of his egg and mayo sarnies – did he feel any guilt – not a bit of it.

A very handsome chap looked down on us.

A Moorings catamaran passed by and we had a short visit from a local fishing boat.

Time to go.

On our way home we admired the natural sculptures.
