Off we went, following John and Sukanya (Millennium) at eight forty five, to meet James for a bimble about his family plantation. As James leapt aboard his Kayak to lead the way a little farther up river, we were joined by a charter group. Jan and family (sorry cannot remember the two ladies names), Joseph and Marie.

Clouds lifted over the peak as the sun grew hotter.

We stepped ashore half a mile up river, James pointed out things to eat, roast, a couple of things to avoid, use as medicine or make tea with.

Tour over, the others left us and we continued on as far as we could. The boys went for a cooling dip. Sukanya did a bit of washing before joining the boys and I paddled, watching the little fish and thankfully, very baby eels.

I feel absolutely certain, when Calvin Klein sees this picture, I will have to beat their recruitment staff off with a blunt stick......

I was just admiring the potential ‘one careful owner’ outside this riverside shack, when the lady of the house appeared with a plate of hot taro and then a big bag of of chestnuts. Not a bit like the ones we remember as children, or the ones you can buy from the street vendors in London or New York, these were truly massive. We bade our host thank you, said farewell and spuddled back to base to see James.

James and his sister with Bear. We were each presented with a ‘plate’ of freshly roasted breadfruit, chunks of newly cut coconut and we shared coconut milk from “the non Bounty Bar type”.
