We had a very pleasant sail on a close reach in F4 - 5 all the way here, here being the Vestmannasund between the islands of Vagar and Streymoy in the NW Faeroes.

The night was clear and, it being new noon, was dark and jolly cold. Overhead the milky way could clearly be seen arching above us while below in the water the phosphorescence was strong enough to light up the side of the boat. But best was the northern lights which put on a show for Fiona during her watch from 23:00 - 02:00. They were mostly white with a tinge of green, in a great arc across the north pole. They hung and shimmered like a curtain and moved. All the more reason to come back one day and see them in mid winter when at their most brilliant.

This morning dawned clear and the Faeroes appeared out of the sunrise, and it's now a sunny autumn morning with a gentle breeze from the south. However the local coastguard keep broadcasting a gale warning for an E to SE F 7 - 8. The GRIB file we downloaded in Iceland shows it not arriving before this evening, so for the moment we are carrying on south down this sound towards the capital Torshavn where we hope to find a berth for the night and take a run ashore. The scenery is staggeringly beautiful so we are actually in no rush to get ashore yet.

We hope to post some pictures once all tied up and having cleared customs.
