We decided to go out for the day as Oliver’s chicken pox seems to not be affecting him and he became very restless after a full day on the boat with no exercise. The winds were quite strong when we left so the dinghy ride across the choppy harbour resulted in everyone getting quite wet – this comes with territory when you live on a boat – but it doesn’t really matter here in 25-30 degrees. We took a taxi (this means we sat in the back of a pickup truck with bench seats along each side) to a restaurant on a plantation in the middle of the island and had a lovely 3 hours over lunch in a beautiful setting. They have a swimming pool as it is also a small hotel so of course Oliver went for a swim before lunch. They made some lovely ‘Dark and Stormy’ cocktails (Rum and ginger beer) with their home brewed ginger beer. We then walked to the east side of the island past deserted classic Caribbean palm lined beaches with a brisk wind straight off the Atlantic and a road lined with various exotic flowering trees and shrubs until we reached the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. This is not really a tourist attraction, just a small working shed of tanks that are used to rear turtles and return them to the sea (over 900 so far since 1998) to try to balance the hunting of them for their meat, eggs and beautiful shells. So you can see turtles at all stages of development up to 5 years, when they are released, and a couple of older ones that have been rescued. Oliver was fascinated by the baby ones swimming ability. Then a taxi back across the island and back to the boat.
