We sailed from Bequia to Tobago Cays on Friday 22nd February. An uneventful 5 hour sail as Oliver wasn’t sick. But he was, of course, queasy and slept for over half the trip (see picture).
We anchored in Tobago Cays at lunchtime and 20 minutes after we moored he drank a big glass of juice and was immediately sick! Oh well.
Tobago Cays is now a marine park and has fantastic snorkelling with loads of turtles, rays, fish and coral and perfect visibility with clear bright blue water. There are several very small uninhabited islands and large lizards abound.
It is a bit rough and windy as there is nothing to the East beyond the shallow reef but the open Atlantic and the trade winds always blow from the East at about 15 or 20 knots (sometimes more).
But this means great open views of the ocean, nearby islands and great sunrises and sunsets.
Oliver was ecstatic about snorkelling with the turtles and we even bought him a turtle emblazoned T-shirt from one of the vendors that come round in boats offering fish, lobsters, bread, T-shirts, etc.
In previous years there were quite a lot of these boat vendors but now there seem to be very few. Possibly the creation of the marine park has had an impact or maybe there is just less business – as there also seem to be less yachts at anchor than we remember?
