Carnival in Martinique. In 2018 these 5 days of celebration were from Saturday 10 February to Wednesday 14 February. ... Hidden from prying eyes each village had prepared new costumes and props which are unveiled only for the “vidé” or CarnivalParade which occupied the streets of Fort de France for 5 days
We only attended for two of those days (Monday and Tuesday) but the preparation, planning and hard work was plain to see. most of the spectators joined in with the themes and sometimes just added themselves to a float or one of the noisy themed and painted cars

The themes were different each day - with Monday being marriage - with lots of cross dressing - and Tuesday (Mardi Gras) the devil - with a black and red theme. It all started 2 months before but revolves around finishing on Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent

A real buzz descended but the island pretty much stood still with offices and shops closed - it was even difficult find an open beach bar near Fort de France

The costumes were fantastic - and music loud and varied with marching drum bands and dancers - a real feats and a hoot - with lots of rum included
