At 11:00 this morning we slipped our lines and motored -
very slowly as there were loads of other boats leaving at the same time -
passing the bands and waving spectators out into the sea. We had a reasonable
start (at 13:00) in a light NE breeze under main and genoa and are now heading
down the coast of Gran Canaria with our new downwind sail and full main. We
intend to keep going south overnight and then turn west in the morning so we do
not get ourselves into the wind hole behind the island's mountains. We are all
nervously excited and looking forwards to crossing the ocean that spreads out in
front of us
