We arrived at this large fishing port just after 1 o'clock and by the time we had tied up and got our selves sorted out we heard a long klaxon sounded from over by the fishing dock - it was about quarter to two by now. Immediately pretty much all the small and medium sized fishing boats started their engines and headed out of port. Mass exodus. Goodness knows what would have happened if we (or any other boat) had been coming in to port at the same time

We were told by the visiting policeman; who was checking our papers; that these were the sardine fleet for Portugal as Peniche sardines are famous all over the country as being the best and indeed since then we have seen sardines on sale being advertised in restaurants as coming from 'Peniche'. Boats from Porto, Figueira, Lagos, Lisbon as well as others come annually to Peniche for the sardine season - June to August. All the local restaurants were selling them - so we just had to give them a try - at the aptly name Restaurant Sardinhos - they were delicious - as was the locally caught sea bream served grilled with garlic potatoes and a vegetable mush

We retired to the boat ia a local cafe on the quayside - 2 coffees and a generous glass of white wine was 3.50 euros - bargain
Upside down view of the fleet on our AIS plotter
We had to try them - delicious
