We left Lefkas Marina yesterday and at last all systems are go! The outboard was returned after having a major service and new thermostat fitted and runs beautifully now. We motored south through the Lefkas canal and once passed the large dredging barge moored in a very narrow section we were able to un-furl the genoa and motor sailed down to Nidri where the wind turned to the south so we had to put away the sail and motor the last couple of miles to reach our destination – deep into the bay at Vlikho. We haven’t been here before but by all accounts it has a good anchorage and although quite busy we soon found a suitable spot quite close to the western bank and near to the Vlikho Yacht Club where we were planning to have lunch. It is a popular spot where many live-aboards hang out so the quay was full, but we were able to get alongside in the dinghy and found the club to book our Sunday roast! While having a lunch time drink yesterday Jacky was able to watch a bit of the French Open Tennis tournament, which she enjoyed. The table duly booked we went back to the boat and had a lazy afternoon followed by supper sitting in the cock-pit as the sun went down. Today we had a working morning – Rob trying to sort out a hoisting system for lifting the dinghy out of the water alongside with the outboard attached and Jacky making a new mosquito netting system for the companionway entrance. The latter involved getting the hacksaw out new netting and pieces of plywood which had to be cut and a sandwich made with the netting glued in-between the pieces. It is being tested just now as she sits typing this latest post in the cockpit with all the mosquito hatch covers in place so hopefully no ‘varmints’ to bite us tonight!
We had a super lunch at the Yacht Club Roast Beef with all the trimmings and even horseradish sauce and yorkshire puddings. Our friends Trevor and Jo from SY Breeze drove down to meet us and we spent a leisurely 3 hours with them enjoying the friendly ambiance of this lovely facility. We discovered that Jo’s family live in Padstow and her mum owns the Ladies clothes shop that Jacky, and her late sister Gill, frequented regularly. What a small world.
We plan to move to the Neilson Sailing Holidays pontoon tomorrow so we can walk into Nihdri and hopefully get a few things needed for the dinghy bridle system from the excellent chandlers there as well as making use of the laundry services which are much less expensive than those in Lefkas.
