Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight we have a new guest onboard Arion.

He is a minor celebrity. He was kidnapped for 17 days, and only returned yesterday. His favourite music is Bob Marley and he speaks many languages including Spanish. May I introduce to you………………. Drum Roll please…….

Rico the Parrot!!!

The Pattisons are babysitting Rico the Parrot for 2 nights on the boat. He was kidnapped here in Port Antonio in late April. His poor owner has spent the last 17 days putting adverts in the Jamaican newspaper, sending messages to pet shops, the police etc. The whole town was looking for Rico! After his reward was raised from $600 to $1000, he was returned last night to his very relieved owner, Dauphin.

At this point, I would like to mention that when I offered to babysit the Parrot, I had no idea that he had been kidnapped or that he is somewhat a minor celeb, with 3000 instagram followers (before the kidnapping incident). Had I known any of this, I would have refused to help on the grounds that we were nowhere near capable or worthy of looking after such a bird. Not to mention that the heavies who stole him in the first place, might come back to take him again!! I am nervous!! Rico (he took a long time to settle off to sleep tonight, so we played him some reggae and I have just been to have a gentle chat with him- he now seems ok!) is currently in his cage, which is secured to the wheel of Arion. We have put a waterproof cover over him, plus a towel to make sure he is comfortable. He has his seeds to eat, and plenty of water. He has already bitten my finger, so not sure this will be a lasting friendship, but apparently we are not to be alarmed when he goes to sleep on one leg, this is normal. His head also turns around the wrong way when asleep (!)

I was less nervous looking after Baby Rosie Massey for the night, than I am having Rico. Give me a newborn any day- I think my days of babysitting Avian celebrities are going to be short lived. Goodnight. Not that I will be sleeping well tonight……………...
