18:21.502N 64:34.586W  So, after enjoying 3 days at anchor on the south side of Peter Island...in isolation...we "sailed" for 4 hours around the Sir Francis Drake Channel between Tortola and the small islands, then headed into Sprat Bay to dock at Peter Island Resort, on the north side of the island.  We sailed with all sails up, in 21 knots of wind....great conditions!  Having been fortunate enough to have visited this island several times in the past, we well appreciated the beauty of this fantastic harbor and resort.  And during our 3 night stay, dockside, we were very glad to spend time with Dick and Georgie, our friends from Annapolis, who were on vacation at the resort....good friends, good weather, good time!!  GEOLOGY AND HISTORY:  Just 40 miles from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands are comprised of more than 90 islands (some just rocks!), all are volcanic except Anegoda (which is a coral island); they "popped up" out of the Caribbean Sea some 65 million years ago.  They are in an active earthquake zone with 900 measurable quakes occur EACH YEAR (most not noticeable) at the boundary of the North American and Caribbean plates.  The population of the British Virgin Islands is just 28,000+.  In February, the average high temp is 85 deg, and the low is 72 deg, with winds averaging +/- 20 knots out of the East (and this is exactly the weather we are experiencing).  Four waves of people settled here, coming from South America, with the first in 2200 BC.  Within 100 years of Spanish arrival in the VI's, there were no indigenous people living here...they all fled south, with the final stronghold being the "Caribs" who are still in a section of Dominica, 1/2 way down the Caribbean chain, at the bottom of the Leeward Islands.  Three words still used today came from the native people of the VI's:  Hurricane, Hammock, and Barbecue....best not to have all in use at the same time!!  More to come....
