The recalcitrant half of the crew were easily persuaded to give up on either catching a taxi or walking to one of the skipper’s old restaurant haunts up the L’Aberwrach river at Paluded, courtesy of transport by Aquila. So off we set, under power, up the creek for 30 minutes to secured mid-stream 5 cables from the objective. With a couple of hours until opening time, the skipper then played with some tools at the truck of the mast and below. On deck, aperitif was taken during which the younger crew member was made to endure ‘true’ stories about Irish men which the older chaps remembered from the 1970’s. (Ken pretended to laugh politely)

The blubber dinghy powered by a rejuvenated Robert (that open heart surgery undertaken in the stable over the winter really has had a miraculous effect!) conveyed us safely ashore to ‘L’Auberge du Pont’ where we were lustily greeted by owner and wafer thin waitress. Local oysters, fresh fish and scallops were washed down with a couple of bottles of a very agreeable Bourgogne Alligoté. Jolly good value meal at €1589, details of which we decided not to declare or enter into the blog. (Ed: remember to delete this bit.)
After dinner, we found that someone had pulled the plug out so the crew enjoyed a spirited yomp across a hundred metres of mud. One of the crew members remembered an appropriate (in?) version of The Eton Boating song to serenade the passage back to Aquila. On safe arrival, a single malt was imbibed – now there’s a surprise! We must have had a lively debate about something????
