Thursday 6 Jun. A very windy night with a near gale from the SE had us all awake fairly early, as Aquila was stern too the associated fetch entering the harbour. ‘Operation wind ship’ was clearly called for. With appropriate warps rigged and fenders judiciously placed, the stern was soon sprung off under power, passed through the eye of the wind, and the hull once more safely back alongside but now facing East. With the aid of some fellow boaters, we then warped Aquila aft along the jetty (now conveniently vacant of other boats) until we achieved more shelter from the breakwater. Peace and tranquillity restored. And all this before breakfast!

The plan for the day was to explore the northern end of Isle d’Oleron by bicycle, but by the time we reached the hire shop it was ‘ferme’ for lunch. So we reverted to Plan B, and enjoyed a 10km walk in lovely sunshine and perfect temperatures that included the lighthouse and its gardens (phot) on the northern corner of the island, crew phot at top of the lighthouse, the rocky coast complete with pre-historic fish traps, and an interregnum for beer and crepes. Zzzzs were heard emanating from some crew members after tea once back on board, recharging batteries prior to a simple meal ashore. Thereafter, everyone seemed too tired for even one round of Liar dice….

Tomorrow, St Martin de Re beckons.
