20TH MARCH,2119 PONCE

We sailed and motor sailed to Ponce Harbour.  A few rain squalls on the way, we caught a 4lb Tuna which made very good eating that evening.  After anchoring in the harbour we took the dingy over the the yachting and fishing club nearby which was being renovated after the hurricane.  We spoke to the office receptionist, not the most friendly welcoming person on earth, consequently we decided that we were quite happy at anchor and would just get a move on rather than spending 4 -5 days leaving the yacht there and going to San Juan for a few days.
We took a taxi into Ponce which in the guide book says it is full of life, lovely buildings and great restaurants, it is run down and not many good restaurants.  Cocktails at Vistas on a roof bar which was good.  We booked to listen to a guitarist at a funky hotel only to find we were the only people there…….. ate at a cafe in the evening on the board walk near the yacht, not brilliant.  The old fire station was fun, very ornate build in 1883 see photos below. I didn’t find any small squares with old imported french fountains as talked about in the guide book.  The government of Porto Rico are broke, everything run down.  An amazing container port which is closed as the USA government in their wisdom decided to put a tariff (according the our taxi driver) on anything exported from the island so nothing is now exported and all such businesses have moved to the Republic of Dominica.
The people here are very friendly and just great, just that one experience at the yacht club.
