We sailed to Grenada and stayed in Port Louise Marina which was lovely. We got there in time for the arrival of Jonathan’s Goddaughter, Tessa, and her friend Ains. The following day we all rented a van to explore the island. First port of call was the old Cuban built airport with old Cuban plane wrecks. This was when Cuba tried to take over Grenada in the early 80s. The Americans had intelligence about it and raided the island to get them out. The U.K. had no such intelligence despite it being part of the Commonwealth, so Ronald Reagan the then President of the USA set up a raiding party in secret and then phoned Margaret Thatcher our then Prime-minister after. The last thing that was wanted was a communist state each end of the Caribbean run by the Russians blocking shipping to and from the Panama Canal.
After this we found a small chocolate factory which made the best chocolate I have ever had called ‘Grenadine Chocolate’. We were able to watch the whole process from making it to wrapping it.
