We dinghy across to Portofino harbour for breakfast and a walk around the headland to the lighthouse. It really is a spectacularly pretty spot. From the six or seven super-yachts at anchor in the bay it was clearly going to be an upmarket place, but it has not been spoiled by that, and the picture postcard views as we walk around the headland are stunning. One of the highlights of the trip so far.

We return to the boat and set off at 14:00 on the way towards Cinque Terre, a collection of five small coastal villages with no road access, and connected only by the sea and by foot - and the main railway line, but we will ignore that for the sake of romance.

As we left Portofino we spotted a substantial log in the water. Definitely a danger to shipping, so I radioed a securité, securité, securité warning on channel 16.

Our over night stop is a bay of no real merit, overlooked by a packed beach and a concrete camp site, but it is absolutely fine for a game of cards and a sleep. If Portofino was sublime, this was not quite ridiculous, but certainly a recalibration.
