Monday, 25 July, pm. After some judicious sailing with the mainsail well reefed and quite a lot of motoring at less speed than usual, we managed to stay far enough north of the nasty gale that swept through Aukland on Saturday night and Sunday and then it was some rip roaring sailing in the westerlies that followed the gale. With up to 30 knots to start with, even "Toad" was happy with our speed and Alcedo rode the big seas in the wake of the gale like a real pro.

We have had several days of lovely blue skies with only a few wet squalls, so we have been very lucky so far. Today is the first really cloudy and cold day, reminding us very much of sailing in the English Cannel. The wind started to drop at the end of the 02.00 to 05.00 am watch and we have been motoring all day to try and get through the seas, which have not moderated with the wind. Not very comfortable but the wind is predicted to fill in sometime this evening and then it will be something like 20 knots from the north west during the night, becoming more westerly with up to 30 knot gusts in the early hours. We are currently about 154 miles from Opua nd will not be able to get in before this latest blow, so we are hoping that the wind does not have any south in it and we can use it to make good speed. Fingers tightly crossed!
